The Learning team head to South Korea 5th December 2017/ Helen Eragona As the glitter and fairy light take-over of Jupiter comes down after our Christmas Fair, the Elves in the learning team were heading straight to the airport, as they set off on their next adventure. Two months ago they received an exciting invitation from the Korean Arts and Culture Education Service to present the key note address at their conference on pre-school education in Seoul.

On Monday 4th December, our Outreach Coordinator Catherine and recently appointed Head of Learning, Kate Latham, boarded a plane with suitcases brimming with matchsticks, plasticine and all manner of creative materials to share with our Korean hosts. Their first stop will be to deliver a day-long day workshop with Korean teachers, exploring child-led learning Jupiter style. They will share with them their Littlesparks lesson plans, and challenge them to find their own creativity with a life drawing exercise. They will also be discussing the differences (and similarities) between Early Years education in South Korea and Scotland.

Their next stop will be Gangwondo, home of this year’s Winter Olympics, for a series of three workshops delivered for groups of 30 primary school aged children. Kate and Catherine will introduce them to the delights of Anthony Gormley’s "Firmament", encouraging them to create their own works of art with the aforementioned match sticks. Their aim will be to bring Jupiter’s creativity into the classroom and allow the children’s curiosity to do the rest.

Finally they will head back to Seoul to deliver a presentation “Creative Play for Curious Minds: Littlesparks and the Scottish Curriculum for Excellence” to a conference of around two hundred educators. They will look at Early Years education and creativity and how it links to preparing young people for life in the 21st Century. Their presentation will be followed by a Q&A during which they will share their Littlesparks recipe for success with practitioners keen to replicate it. We will be sharing updates from Kate and Catherine throughout the week on our facebook, twitter and instagram feeds, so look out for posts there.
